Uphold the Spirit of "Two Bombs, One Satellite" and Gather Youthful Strength for Endeavor

12 November,2025

On November 8, 2025, a social practice group from Chongqing University—taking the courseAn Introduction to Mao Zedong Thought and the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics—visited the Two Bombs City in Zitong, Mianyang, Sichuan Province. The trip aimed to honor the legacy of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" pioneers, promote their timeless spirit, and strengthen patriotism and ambition among young people. It also leveraged the off-campus practical teaching base for "Grand Ideological and Political Courses" to deepen education in revolutionary traditions.

Located at the foot of Changqing Mountain in Zitong County, the Two Bombs City was the former headquarters of the China Academy of Engineering Physics (Base 902) and the second major research base for China's nuclear weapons program. It preserves precious historical memories of how top scientists and tens of thousands of researchers worked in secrecy to overcome extreme difficulties for national security.

The group first visited the former residence of Wang Ganchang, then attended a vivid mini-Party lecture that reviewed the founding of Base 902 and recounted vivid stories of scientific breakthroughs under harsh conditions.

Next, they arrived at the former residence of Deng Jiaxian. Four student representatives laid a flower basket before his bronze statue, and all participants stood in solemn tribute. Touring the simple living quarters and viewing precious artifacts, students listened to on-site stories of the pioneers' dedication. The modest conditions silently spoke of years of relentless struggle and glory, helping students deeply grasp the spirit of "achieving extraordinary feats while remaining unknown to the public".

Finally, the group visited the Two Bombs City Museum. On the first floor, the motto "Achieve Extraordinary Feats, Remain Unknown to the Public" stands alongside national medals and a large relief honoring the 23 founding scientists. The second and third floors feature the exhibition "Great Achievements, Nuclear Shield for the Nation", which chronicles the entire development of China's "Two Bombs, One Satellite" program. Yellowed manuscripts, vintage equipment, and immersive scenes vividly show the hardships and triumphs of the early years. Guided by the docent, students learned the full history, absorbed the patriots' stories, and were deeply moved by their devotion and courage to innovate.

This visit was both a reflection on a heroic era and a profound spiritual experience. Through immersive on-site learning, students gained a clear understanding of the grueling journey of China's nuclear research, felt the sincere patriotism of the older-generation scientists who "devoted their lives to the motherland", and fully grasped the meaning and modern value of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" spirit. The activity strengthened their resolve to carry forward the revolutionary legacy, draw strength for progress, and take on the responsibilities of the new era.
