The School of Marxism of Chongqing University has a long history and solid foundation.In 2000, the Chongqing Architecture University and the Chongqing Architecture College were integrated with the former Chongqing University, then today’s Chongqing University was established. The former respective teaching units of ideological and political Education also were merged into the School of Trade and Law of Chongqing University,which was then renamed as School of Trade and Public Administration in 2002. In 2008, the University decided to separately set up a teaching and research institution for Marxist theories for the undergraduate ideological and political education, which had an equal status as the School of Trade and Public Administration with the same management system. Since 2011, Teaching and Research Institution of Marxist Theories has been an independent unit under direct supervision of the University. The Institution was definitely named as the School of Marxism in July, 2016.
The School of Marxism has been co-funded and mutually supported by the Publicity Bureau of Chongqing Municipality and Chongqing University, authorized as one of the municipal key Marxist schools. The School has six departments, i.e., Department of Postgraduate Ideological and Political Education, Department of Basic Theory of Marxism, Department of Sinicization of Marxism, Department of Ideology,Morality and Law,Department of Modern and Contemporary Chinese History and Department of Affairs and Policies. The School is responsible for the ideological and political education of all the students in the University. There are a lot of excellent staff with good reputation in the School, including an Excellent Teaching and Scientific Research Team awarded by the Ministry of Education, a Nomination Award of National Influential Ideological and Political Educator, six Chongqing Municipal Funding Programs for Excellent Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Educators in Colleges and Universities, two most Popular Teachers of Chongqing University, more than ten Excellent Teachers of Chongqing University, Excellent Young Teachers of Chongqing University, Teaching Fund Award, etc.
The School has been fully accredited to train master and doctoral students majoring in Marxism and its related disciplines. Moreover, the School has five disciplinary platforms with two provincial level academic research centers, Policy and Theory Research Center of Civil Affairs Bureau of Chongqing Municipality as well as Chongqing Municipal Center for the Popularization of Humanities and Social Sciences Knowledge. The school has initially formed a high-qualified staff team for its further development with appropriate ages, academic titles and disciplines, there are 58 teachers with 14 professors, 24 associate professors and 20 lecturers nowadays and six PhD supervisors. Some of the staff have been awarded academic honors, such as the Famous Experts and Teachers in the Field of Philosophy and Social Science of Chongqing Municipal Talent Plan,the Young Gifted Top One of Chongqing Municipal Talents, the Chongqing Municipal Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, the Candidate of Young Outstanding Talents of Ideological and Political Education Support Program Funded by Ministry of Education, the Chongqing Municipal Academic and Technical Leaders and the Reserve Candidates of Chongqing Municipal Academic and Technical Leaders.
According to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the School will enhance its academic influence and staff’s educational competence with the support of the University to achieve the goal of building a national first-class Marxist school .
