Professor Yang Hu Delivers the 84th Red Rock Lecture Series

04 November,2025

On October 24, 2025, the 84th session of the Red Rock Lecture Series was held in Room 412, School of Marxism, Chongqing University. Professor Yang Hu from Peking University was invited to deliver a special lecture entitled "Li Dazhao's Contacts with Modern Figures from Sichuan and Chongqing and Their Influence". The lecture was chaired by Professor Du Junhua of the School of Marxism, and faculty members and students attended the event.

At the beginning of the lecture, Yang Hu pointed out that against the background of drastic social changes in modern times, Li Dazhao's contacts with people from Sichuan and Chongqing resulted from cross-regional intellectual resonance and social mobility. The two sides formed a multi-level interactive circle, which played a key role in spreading new ideas and advancing the revolutionary process. Yang Hu held that this multi-level interactive circle is of multi-dimensional significance, which is mainly reflected in four aspects: in the field of associations, the Young China Association with people from Sichuan and Chongqing as the core became an important platform for cultivating talents and spreading ideas during the May Fourth Period; senior figures provided crucial support for Li Dazhao to promote ideological innovation and spread new trends of thought; peers built consensus through collaboration in academic research and revolutionary activities, furthering the spread of Marxism; in terms of guiding young people, Li Dazhao pointed out the revolutionary direction for young people in Sichuan and Chongqing and helped them grow into key early revolutionary forces.

During the interactive session, in response to a question on the textual research of historical materials about the early communist group in Chongqing, Yang Hu answered based on first-hand historical materials and stressed that historical research must rely on cross-verification of diverse sources. On the topic of article structure and historical material collection, he noted that researchers should study materials with a problem-oriented approach and gather historical resources through multiple channels.

This lecture not only deepened the systematic understanding of faculty and students on the historical connection between Li Dazhao's revolutionary practice and the Sichuan-Chongqing region, but also greatly broadened their academic horizons and improved their research methods. With solid historical analysis and rigorous research perspectives, it also provided innovative and enlightening methodological guidance for academic exploration in related fields.
